Juliet was an Anglo Indian, a hybrid population in India created by the inter-marriage of European men and Indian women and who adopted European customs and mannerisms. The Anglo-Indians were brought up in an atmosphere of trade and was instrumental in the success of the East India Company. Juliet was partly Spanish and kept a Spanish hand-fan and a mantilla, a lace scarf worn by Spanish ladies over the hair and shoulders. She also held a Bachelor of Arts degree, rare in those days, and, as uncommon, was nine years older than her husband.
