About Clement Kilroy CampbellClement Kilroy Campbell, an Irishman, born in 1873 in Allahabad, India. Clement was an only child as his sister died in her childhood years. His name was, in fact, a combination of two surnames for after the death of Clement's father, a civil servant with the British Indian Government, his mother, who was Irish, continued to live in India and married a Mr Campbell. Clement then adopted his stepfather's surname as his own. One can only speculate whether this was due to the closeness of both men or whether this was something imposed. It was perhaps the former as Clement was reported to have said that his step-father always treated him well. When Clement's mother passed away, his stepfather remarried. Clement himself married Juliet Ada Roderick in India and later moved to Malaya as a forest officer. Juliet was an Anglo Indian, a hybrid population in India created by the inter-marriage of European men and Indian women and who adopted European customs and mannerisms. The Anglo-Indians were brought up in an atmosphere of trade and was instrumental in the success of the East India Company. Juliet was partly Spanish and kept a Spanish hand-fan and a mantilla, a lace scarf worn by Spanish ladies over the hair and shoulders. She also held a Bachelor of Arts degree, rare in those days, and, as uncommon, was nine years older than her husband. After Clement's retirement, he became a rubber planter in Port Dickson and later at the Raja Alang estate in Kajang. His knowledge of rubber planting was said to be exceptional, leading one of his cadets to later say that "What the honourable Mr C.K Campbell does not know about rubber-planting can be written on the back of a stamp". Clement must also have been interested in the history of the country that had now become his home, for he wrote four books: Rimba, By-gone Selangor, By-gone Negri Sembilan and By-gone Perak. Clement and Juliet had four daughters: Dulcie, Olivia, Iris and Sidney, also known as Aunt Poppy. Juliet passed away in 1936, aged 72, and Clement followed twenty years later, aged 83. |

This was the grandfather of my former English teacher and school principal, the late Mr. R.I.S. Stork, who just passed away on 3 April 2013, aged 79.
